How to Save a YouTube Thumbnail on iPhone, Android & Mac

Updated July 2026·6 min read·By ThumbGrab

YouTube does not give you a "save thumbnail" button — but once you know the trick, you can grab any video's thumbnail image in about 30 seconds, on any device. This guide covers iPhone, Android, Mac, and Windows, plus a free online downloader that works in mobile Safari and Chrome with no app and no login.

The fastest way: use a free downloader

Same method on every device — only the last "save" step changes per platform.

Paste the link → Download
The simplest route on any device is a browser-based thumbnail downloader. It pulls the full 1280×720 image, works on iPhone, Android, Mac, and Windows, and needs no app install or account.

Before the per-platform steps, here is the universal flow. It works identically on iOS Safari, Android Chrome, macOS Safari, and Windows Edge — the only thing that changes is how your browser hands the downloaded file back to you.

  1. Copy the video link. In the YouTube app, tap Share → Copy link. On desktop, copy the URL from the address bar. Any youtube.com/watch?v=…, youtu.be/…, /shorts/…, /embed/… or /live/… link works.
  2. Paste it into ThumbGrab. Open ThumbGrab's thumbnail downloader in your browser and paste the link into the input box. The tool extracts the 11-character video ID and pulls all five thumbnail resolutions YouTube serves.
  3. Tap Download on the Maxres card. That is the 1280×720 HD version. If maxres is missing for that video, the tool falls back to hqdefault at 480×360 — the one size YouTube guarantees for every video.

That is the whole flow. The rest of this guide explains how the final "save to device" step behaves on each platform, because that is the part that actually differs.

1

Copy the video URL

Tap Share → Copy link in the YouTube app, or copy the address bar on desktop. Accepts watch?v=, youtu.be, /shorts/, /embed/, /live/.

2

Paste into ThumbGrab

Open the thumbnail downloader in your mobile or desktop browser and paste the link. It runs entirely client-side — nothing is uploaded.

3

Download the image

Tap Download on the Maxres (1280×720) card. Your browser then saves the file using its normal download flow — see your platform below.

iOS Safari is the smoothest path. The Files app handles the save.

On an iPhone, open Safari (not the in-app YouTube browser — long-press a link in the YouTube app and choose Open in Safari) and go through the three steps above. When you tap Download on the Maxres card, Safari shows a prompt asking where to save the file. Pick On my iPhone → Downloads, and the JPG lands in the Files app under Downloads.

To move it into Photos: open the Files app, find the thumbnail, long-press it, and choose Save Image. It now appears in your Camera Roll alongside your own photos. On iOS 13 and later, Safari's download manager is the default behaviour — before iOS 13, Safari would open the image in a new tab and you had to long-press → Save Image directly. If you are on a version older than iOS 13, the long-press-on-image path still works as a fallback.

The quick alternative, no downloader needed: open the YouTube video in Safari, swap the URL to https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg, let the image load, long-press it, and pick Save Image. This skips Files entirely but only gives you one resolution, and maxres is missing on roughly a third of videos — the downloader is more reliable.

Chrome handles downloads natively — the file lands in your Downloads folder.

On Android, open Chrome and run the same three-step flow. When you tap Download on the Maxres card, Chrome pulls the JPG and drops it straight into your Downloads folder. A notification appears in the notification shade — tap it to open the image, or pull down the notification to reveal a Open / Save to Photos pair of actions depending on your manufacturer (Samsung, Pixel, and Xiaomi each label this slightly differently, but all of them offer it).

To find the file later: open the Files app (pre-installed on most Android phones, or grab Google's Files by Google), tap Downloads, and the thumbnail is there. Long-press it to share, move it to Pictures, or set it as a contact photo. On Android 10 and up, downloaded images can also be picked up directly inside the Photos or Gallery app under a Downloads album — no manual move needed.

The no-downloader route on Android is the same as on iPhone: open the image at https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg in Chrome, long-press the loaded image, and pick Download image. Chrome saves it to Downloads automatically. Useful when you only need one thumbnail and do not want to leave the page you are on.

Save a YouTube thumbnail on Mac

Safari or Chrome — both behave the same, downloads go to the Downloads folder.

On macOS, open Safari or Chrome and run the three-step flow. Tap Download on the Maxres card and the JPG drops into your Downloads folder (or whichever folder you have set as the default in Safari → Settings → General → File download location). Click the download arrow in Safari's toolbar to reveal it, or press Cmd + Option + L in Chrome to jump straight to the downloaded file in Finder.

The right-click route on Mac is even faster: open the YouTube video page, right-click (or Control-click) the thumbnail shown on the watch page, and choose Save Image As…. You get a Finder dialog to pick the destination and rename the file. Note that the watch-page thumbnail is sometimes a lower-resolution preview — if you need the full 1280×720, use the downloader instead. Dragging the saved file from Downloads into Photos (or pressing Cmd + Shift + I in Photos → Import) adds it to your photo library.

Edge or Chrome — the standard right-click flow is the fastest on Windows.

On Windows, open Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome and run the same three-step flow through ThumbGrab. Tap Download on the Maxres card and the file lands in your Downloads folder (C:\Users\YourName\Downloads). Press Ctrl + J in either browser to open the downloads list and click Show in folder to jump straight to the file in File Explorer.

The classic Windows route: open the YouTube video in your browser, right-click the thumbnail image on the watch page, and pick Save picture as…. You get a File Explorer dialog to choose where to save and what to name the file. As on Mac, the watch-page preview can be lower-resolution than the underlying maxresdefault — if you need the full 1280×720, the downloader is the safer bet. From File Explorer, right-click the saved JPG → Set as desktop background if you want it on your desktop, or drop it into Pictures to find it inside the Photos app.

Why some thumbnails only save at 480×360

It is not a downloader bug — the higher-resolution file simply does not exist.

YouTube serves five thumbnail sizes per video: maxresdefault (1280×720), sddefault (640×480), hqdefault (480×360), mqdefault (320×180), and default (120×90). The full 1280×720 version — the one you actually want — is only generated when the creator uploads a custom thumbnail or when YouTube's auto-generator decides the video is high enough quality to merit one.

Roughly a third of public videos lack a maxresdefault: older uploads from before 2015, most auto-generated channels (music compilations, lyric videos, AI voice channels), and a chunk of Shorts. When maxres is missing, YouTube falls back to hqdefault at 480×360 — a 4:3 image with black pillar bars on the sides — and that is the best resolution that exists for that video. No downloader, no browser extension, no desktop app can pull a 1280×720 file that YouTube never created.

To check whether a given video has the full HD version before you commit, paste its URL into the downloader — the Maxres card shows a broken-image fallback if maxres is absent, and you can grab the HQ version instead. For the full breakdown of every resolution YouTube serves, see our YouTube thumbnail size guide.

Quick FAQ

The four questions everyone asks about saving YouTube thumbnails.

Can I save a thumbnail directly inside the YouTube app?
No. The YouTube app has no built-in save-thumbnail button, and the long-press menu on a video only offers Save to Watch Later, Save to playlist, or Share — there is no option that downloads the cover image to your camera roll or gallery. The app also blocks the right-click and long-press image menus that desktop browsers use to save a picture, so you cannot simply tap and hold the thumbnail inside the YouTube app to keep it. To get the actual image file on iPhone or Android, tap Share inside the YouTube app, choose Copy link, then open a free browser-based downloader such as ThumbGrab in mobile Safari or Chrome and paste the link. The tool pulls every thumbnail resolution YouTube has stored for that video, and you save the one you want with a long-press on iOS or a tap-and-hold on Android, with no extra app install and no login.
Will the saved thumbnail be high resolution?
If the video has a maxresdefault thumbnail, yes — the downloader pulls that full 1280×720 HD version and it will look crisp on any phone or desktop screen. About a third of videos, however, only have hqdefault at 480×360, and for those that 480×360 file is genuinely the highest resolution that exists, because YouTube never generated a larger one. This commonly affects videos uploaded before custom HD thumbnails existed, auto-generated topic and music channels, Shorts recorded on a phone with no custom cover, and many Live replays. There is no way to upscale that 480×360 file into a true 1280×720 image — the extra pixels were never captured, so any upscaling just stretches the existing soft pixels. ThumbGrab checks every resolution a given video has (maxres, sd, hq, mq, default) and surfaces the largest real file, so you always know the exact quality before you tap save.
Is it legal to save and reuse YouTube thumbnails?
Saving a thumbnail for personal reference, design study, or use in your own review video with commentary is generally fine. Re-uploading someone else's thumbnail as your own, or using it commercially without the creator's permission, can infringe their copyright. When in doubt, ask the channel owner — most creators are happy to grant permission with a credit. Always follow YouTube's Terms of Service and respect the original creator.
Is ThumbGrab free? Do I need to sign up?
Yes — completely free, no account, no app install, no watermarks. Paste a link and download. The tool runs in your browser and pulls thumbnails straight from YouTube's public image CDN, so there is no server processing your request and nothing stored about you.
