YouTube Thumbnail Size: 1280×720

The standard YouTube thumbnail size is 1280×720 pixels (16:9). Below is every resolution YouTube serves, the minimums, how Shorts differ, and a free tool to check any video's thumbnail sizes in one paste.

What size is a YouTube thumbnail?

The short answer, then the full breakdown.

1280 × 720 px
The recommended YouTube thumbnail size — 16:9 horizontal, JPG/PNG, under 2 MB. This is what YouTube shows on watch pages, in search, and next to related videos.

A YouTube thumbnail is 1280 × 720 pixels at a 16:9 horizontal aspect ratio. That is the size YouTube recommends you upload as a custom thumbnail, and it is the size YouTube displays on the watch page, in search results, on the home feed, and next to related videos. Because the player itself is 16:9, a 1280×720 image lines up edge to edge with no cropping.

The minimum YouTube will accept for a custom thumbnail is 640×360, but that floor is rarely worth using — on a high-DPI phone or a Retina display, a 640×360 image looks visibly soft and the platform upscales it. Always export at the full 1280×720. Keep the file under 2 MB (YouTube rejects anything larger), and prefer PNG when the thumbnail has crisp text or a logo, since JPG compression blurs sharp edges.

Every YouTube thumbnail resolution

YouTube serves five thumbnail sizes per video. Here is what each one is and where it shows up.

ResolutionDimensionsAspectAlways exists?Used for
Maxres
HD
1280 × 720 px 16:9 No — missing on some videos Custom thumbnail, watch page, HD embeds
SD 640 × 480 px 4:3 Usually Medium-quality embeds
HQ 480 × 360 px 4:3 Yes — always present Default thumbnail, fallback when maxres is missing
MQ 320 × 180 px 16:9 Yes Search results, related-video strips
Default 120 × 90 px 4:3 Yes Tiny inline previews

The one that matters most is maxresdefault at 1280×720 — that is the file YouTube uses as your custom thumbnail when you upload one. The catch: it is not generated for every video. Older uploads, auto-generated channels, and some Shorts lack a maxresdefault entirely, and YouTube falls back to hqdefault (480×360), which is the one size that is always present for every video. If you have ever pasted a YouTube link into a downloader and only got 480×360 back, this is why — the 1280×720 version simply does not exist for that video.

YouTube Shorts thumbnail size — different

Shorts are vertical, so their thumbnails are vertical too. Do not reuse a 1280×720 image for a Short.

Regular video
1280 × 72016:9 horizontal
Shorts
1080 × 19209:16 vertical
Channel avatar
800 × 8001:1 square

A YouTube Shorts thumbnail is 1080×1920 pixels at a 9:16 vertical aspect ratio — almost twice as tall as the regular 1280×720 thumbnail is wide. Shorts are watched in a full-screen, swipe-up vertical feed, so a horizontal 1280×720 image gets cropped on the left and right, and your subject can end up sliced in half. If you are making a Short, use 1080×1920.

How to download a thumbnail at full size

Three steps from a video link to a 1280×720 image file.

1

Copy the video URL

Grab any youtube.com/watch?v=…, youtu.be/…, /shorts/…, /embed/… or /live/… link from the address bar or share button.

2

Open the downloader

Paste the link into the YouTube Thumbnail Downloader on the home page. It pulls all five resolutions in one go.

3

Save the 1280×720

Click Download on the Maxres (1280×720) card. If maxres is missing for that video, grab HQ (480×360) instead — it is always there.

YouTube thumbnail size — FAQ

Quick answers to the most common questions about YouTube thumbnail dimensions.

What is the YouTube thumbnail size?
The standard YouTube thumbnail size is 1280×720 pixels with a 16:9 horizontal aspect ratio, and YouTube recommends this exact resolution for every custom thumbnail upload. The file must be under 2 MB and saved as JPG, PNG, or GIF, with PNG giving the cleanest text and logos. The 1280×720 size is what YouTube displays on the watch page, in mobile and desktop search results, in the Up Next sidebar, and on channel pages, so designing at this resolution prevents any upscaling or softness on high-DPI Retina and 4K screens. A safe practice is to keep all text and important faces inside the central 1280×720 frame, because YouTube may crop edges slightly when the same image is reused as an embedded player preview. Exporting at 1280×720 also gives a 16:9 ratio that matches the video player, so the thumbnail never letterboxes or distorts on any device.
What is the minimum size for a YouTube thumbnail?
YouTube's documented minimum for a custom thumbnail is 640×360 pixels, but the recommended size is 1280×720. A 640×360 image will look soft on high-DPI screens and may be upscaled, so always export at the full 1280×720 when possible.
What aspect ratio is a YouTube thumbnail?
A standard YouTube video thumbnail uses a 16:9 horizontal aspect ratio — the same landscape shape as the video player. That means 1280×720, 1920×1080, or any 16:9 size will display without cropping.
What size is a YouTube Shorts thumbnail?
A YouTube Shorts thumbnail is 1080×1920 pixels at a 9:16 vertical aspect ratio — different from the regular 1280×720 horizontal thumbnail. Shorts are watched in a vertical feed, so the thumbnail has to be vertical too. See our Shorts thumbnail size guide for the full breakdown.
What file format and size can a YouTube thumbnail be?
YouTube thumbnails accept JPG, PNG, and GIF formats, with a maximum file size of 2 MB. PNG is best when the thumbnail has sharp text or a logo, since JPG compression blurs edges.
Why are some YouTube thumbnails only 480×360?
YouTube only generates the full 1280×720 maxresdefault file when a creator uploads a custom HD thumbnail, so videos without one are stuck at the smaller hqdefault, which is always 480×360. This commonly affects videos uploaded before 2013, auto-generated topic and music channels, Shorts recorded on a phone with no custom cover, and many Live replays, because none of those flows produce a maxres asset. When you request maxresdefault.jpg for one of these videos, YouTube returns a 404 and the player silently falls back to hqdefault, which is only 480×360 (a quarter of the area of 1280×720) and looks visibly soft on modern Retina, 4K, and large desktop screens. That is why a thumbnail that looks crisp on the watch page can look blurry when downloaded — you are actually grabbing hqdefault. Paste the URL into the checker above to see exactly which resolutions a given video has, then download the largest one.
